Giro d’Italia 2024, nothing serious for Biniam Girmay: “In the next days we will have the detailed results of the exams”

Reassuring news for Biniam Girmay after the (double) crash that led to his withdrawal from the Giro d’Italia 2024. The unfortunate Eritrean rider ended up twice on the ground in the space of a few minutes, and the Intermarché – Wanty leader found himself in pain in an ambulance to be transported to the hospital, where the necessary investigations were carried out. Fortunately, according to his team, the class of 2000 was not reported to have suffered any serious consequences, although no details of the eventual injury sustained are given for the moment, explaining that a few days are still needed to have the full balance sheet.

“After the two crashes, Biniam Girmay was taken to the hospital for in-depth examinations to make an exact diagnosis and discover any injuries,” explains team doctor Fabien Cardinale, “We will know the detailed results in the coming days. Biniam has now rejoined the team and can count on the moral support of all his teammates and staff to recover.”

Indeed, the talented African had appeared visibly shaken already after the first crash, which occurred with about 70 kilometers to go and in which other riders such as Matteo Trentin, Ben O’Connor and Damien Touzé were also involved. The slippery roads on which he had to restart, combined with the frenzy of wanting to get back in at a time when he may not have fully recovered, led him to another slip. Having fallen in a high-speed corner, Girmay at that point had to raise the white flag and waved goodbye to the Corsa Rosa, to which he had arrived with great motivation with the goal of at least repeating what he did two years ago, when he won a stage (before having to retire as a result of an unfortunate accident with the cork of the sparkling wine bottle opened on the stage in celebration). His best result for this edition will therefore remain his third place in Fossano.
