Giro d’Italia 2024, UCI denies threatening to disqualify Tadej Pogacar over granata shorts, “Never happened”.

The word has not yet come to an end on the issue of granata shorts at the 2024 Giro d’Italia. Worn by Tadej Pogacar during the third stage, they had immediately caused controversy, not only because of questions of taste and tradition, but also because of the possibility that they were not properly regulation. Despite the defense of RCS Sport, which jointly made the uniform with Castelli and supplied it to UAE Team Emirates for its leader to wear, it was the Slovenian rider himself who had let it be known that the UCI had contacted the team saying that he would no longer have to wear them, under penalty of disqualification from the race.

In fact, yesterday, the 1998 class was wearing the traditional team shorts, forgoing the full official uniform. A decision that seemed to end the issue, but today the international body formally denies via L’Equipe that it has in any way hindered its use: “There is no problem with the issue of jerseys. No rules have been violated. There was never any talk of disqualifying Pogacar, the president of the UCI jury never threatened Pogacar. It never happened.”
